Paddle in the Mediterranean Sea

There is only one thing to do on a late May Sunday morning and that is to paddle in the Mediterranean sea. Gin Gin needed to collect some shells for an art project so we went for a walk and a paddle until we became so hot that we all agreed it was time to head home.

Very few people about on the beach but busier than it has been all year. Some photos to show you the beach in-between Marbella and Puerto Banus, by the Puente Romano hotel.

At lunch time bbq's are sizzling on the old sailing boats

The paseo runs all the way from Marbella to Puerto Banus. Popular with cyclists, walkers and those that just want to sit quietly on one of the many benches and just sit and look out to sea.

Terra Sana more than just a restaurant

George loves his chocolate cakes

George loves his chocolate cakes

Here is a picture of my very lucky teddy. He has picked up a few books from Terra Sana, 2 euros each. He also is having a sniff of the chocolate cakes that my daughter made today in her cookery class there, along with other children and the chef. Terra Sana has a market, cookery classes for children, sells handmade soaps, organic food in its deli, second hand books……Terra Sana on the Golen Mile in Marbella,  is more than just a restaurant.

Give me a book, a mojito and birdsong and I'm in heaven.

A week-end of reading lies ahead.....

Lovely cake shop on the Golden Mile

My husband and I were lamenting on the lack of really good cake shops in Marbella. There is Terra Sana and Goya but other than that the cakes that look so full or promise in the windows are often just full or artificial cream and taste very synthetic.

We thought we would go to the German coffee shop on the Golden Mile near the pharmacy and opposite the Restaurant Tiberio. Well what a change. It has taken over the premises next door and has such a lovely vibe. Teracotta painted walls, dark wooden furniture with silver candlesticks and oversized vases with vines and mustard comfy sofas. Cakes to die for, apple, rasberry, carrot, all fresh and delicious. We spent a good five minutes just looking at them trying to decide which ones. There is a rack of newspapers and magazines for you to enjoy and there was a mixture of couple and single people all taking time out on a hectic Saturday just to enjoy a quiet coffee.

I don’t know the name of it but there was a large sign saying BISTRO and they serve lunch and dinner too.

Certainly worth a trip and if you are going with someone, share the cake, my carrot cake was huge……

Second hand English books

I have just picked up some excellent second hand English books in the deli part of Terra Sana on the Golden Mile. As you go in on the right hand side there is a bookcase full of books that cost 2 euros each. The proceeds go towards planting sapling trees in a nature reserve here in Spain.

I picked up authors such as Harlan Coben, Jonathan Kellerman and Nora Roberts, there was an excellent choice.

If you like reading, head there to pick up a good book and help a good cause.

Recommended Mercadona white wine

The beauty of wine in Spain is that it is so cheap, that you can live dangerously, buy a bottle that grabs your fancy and if the contents end up down the sink you will only have lost a couple of euros. Not the end of the world.

Well I did that last week. I picked up a bottle of Mercadona Palacio de Vivero, Verdejo 2009 and my oh my, it is absolutely delicious. Fruity without being tart and just hits all the right spots, notes……..if you go to Mercadona I highly recommend this bottle of white wine. You don’t need to cook, just drink……

Palacio de Vivero, going, going……..

GONE…hiccup.

Dental clinic Nueva Andalucia

There is a new dental clinic in Nueva Andalucia just past the bull ring and I may be wrong but it looks like another dental clinic may be turning up on the corner by Mercadona. I’ve driven past Cluttons the estate agents a couple of times and it looks to me as though it has closed. Above it is a huge sign saying British Dental Clinic but as I’ve tried to avoid holding cars up and sadly I am not an owl with a swivel head, I still can’t be sure that Cluttons is no more…….will try again to look properly tomorrow.

Then we have the dental clinic in the triangular shape building near the Pasta Cafe and another one just before the bull ring opposite the carpet shop.

I’ve a friend who has a dental clinic in Fuengirola and opened up another one 18 months ago in San Pedro. It is already turning around a profit and very popular. Nice to see one line of business that is at least successful and bucking the trend.

Told you…

Told you that they are waiting for you. It’s that time of year when mosquitoes feast on human prey, mainly you and me. If you haven’t had any bites yet, it will be for two reasons.

You smell so bad that the winged ones can’t detect your carbon dioxide smell.

And you have a husband like mine whose eyeballs bulge just at the mention of mmmmm’s. Not even allowed to say that word mosquito in our house, not unless you want to risk dying from insecticide poisoning at the hand of his truly. He has giant canisters all over the house, in every room and he used to have those plug in mosquito repellants too until I convinced him that he was destroying our immune systems and he was killing us slowly. It took a few nights of me pretending to cough, then wheeze and occasionally hold my breath for long periods, whilst faking sleep, before he finally believed me. No, he doesn’t read my blog. Shhh.

We went into El Corte Ingles recently to buy a travel cot and I knew something was wrong when in the middle of talking to the sales lady about her range of travel cots he suddenly went very quiet and his eyes went upwards. Not quite into their sockets but enough to make me wonder if he was having a seizure, if his life insurance policy was up to date and why on earth hadn’t I made a Spanish will.

It was actually a mosquito that he had spotted on the ceiling. She really wasn’t bothered in the slightest until she grasped that unless she killed it she wasn’t going to make a sale from the man in front of her who had suddenly turned all dark, silent and brooding.

So we are pretty much mosquito free. We have the nets, we have the sprays and I have my husband. I also have lavendar spray that I use so that if one does appear whilst we are sleeping, at least it will go for my husband instead of me.

If you are in the Campo beware. My daughter came home from a sleepover with over 16 bites. My husband still hasn’t recovered from the shock of seeing them……

My preferred method of extermination, from Mercadona, kills all living things ( but not husbands) dead in 1.352 seconds. Alternatively you can hire my husband for the price of a bag of jellybabies.....

My tomato plant is in flower

My tomato plant is in flower. I’ve looked after it now for over 4 weeks from a tiny baby so I’m very excited as it is the promise of things to come, fresh home grown tomatoes so long as I remember to water them. Last year we went away for a few days and I lost all my toms. I also lost my lemons, they just fell like blackened pods to the floor. So again, I’m a happy girl today as my lemon tree on the patio has some reasonably plump lime green lemons on its stem.

The photo of the trees are my neighbours fruit trees. We did go scrumping as they live in Saudi Arabia and so only the birds benefit from the juicy fruits. However there is only so much of a good thing that you can have.
