The Marbella feria of 2011 is still on, ending on June 12th. Monday will be a local holiday in Marbella with many shops and restaurants closed for the day.

We are going to leave the children home this time, as they are not keen on crowds of knees, bottoms and frills and take my mum and dad for a cafe con leche, churros and to people watch.

Linea Direct Car Insurance

I am due renewal of my linea direct car insurance policy at the end of the month and I am receiving daily calls to take payment. The renewal notice said that they would take money via a standing order if they did not hear from me.

I queried today this as I cancelled my standing order/direct debit with my bank last year. The sales lady said in Spain it is a legal requirement for them to have all my bank details, in case  there is an accident. I have to say that doesn’t sound quite right so I pushed harder to ask her to put a note on her computer that I did not want a standing order to remain in place and that in future I would always pay by credit/debit card. This was also refused. In other words by taking out a car insurance policy with Linea Direct I will always run the risk of having them deduct money from my account, even though I have asked them not to. A bank has confirmed that even when I cancel a direct debit the company concerned still has the right to take my money.

Now I have been very happy with Linea Direct car insurance, they write and speak to you in English and their assistance when needed was first rate. Their sales lady after 20 seconds offered me a 30 euro discount but I want more so I am going to go elsewhere for a quote and see if I can find something cheaper and then come back to Linea Direct. In my experience when you say you have a quote of X from another company, they suddenly work very hard to match it.

However I would be very wary to making any direct debits in the future to any company, since it appears you can never truly cancel them….

Update, another car insurance company did offer me a cheaper quote but the excess was 350 euros and for the sake of a 20 euros saving, I will stick with Linea Direct as I have had a good experience with them in the past and you never know if you will receive that with a new company. Anyone else that uses someone different let me know and I’ll post it for others to see.

Warms the cockles of your heart

Hubby is at Malaga airport waiting for my mum and dad to arrive and he has just described to me one arrival: a grandad seeing his granchild for the first time, a new born baby. His delight, his tears….ahhhhhh.

If you want to see love and have the cockles of your heart warmed head to the arrivals lounge at Malaga airport. You’ll see families re-uniting, young love, old love, past loves and well, all sorts of love. You may see indifference but you won’t see hate.

They should provide theatre seats and popcorn for hopeless romantics like me……and I’ll head down there during my time off work for a “love fix and all is right with mankind chord.”

Cuba for a holiday

A friend has decided to go to Cuba on her own and travel around. Cuba is a communist country and so she hasn’t been able to send me any photographs as in Cuba internet access is restricted. The locals are not allowed internet access but the hotels have them available and are Government owned.

She is absolutely having a ball in Cuba. She is finding dancers and live music around each street corner and staying with families in beautiful old buildings with wrought iron balconies with tumbling geraniums falling from each corner. She has 2 double beds in her room, a dressing room and a dining area…with mountain views.

Here are a few of her comments on her travels and the prices! Thought I would post this as there are a few holidays on offer at all inclusive hotels in Cuba and they offer tremendous value. My friend stayed the first few nights in a five star hotel and was paying 50 euros per night.

Today – ate the most amazing lobster, with rice and salad —– for yes can believe it 4 euros – I took a picture to prove to you all that life here is amazing. I am currently staying on a thin strip of land that has the Caribbean ocean on both sides !!!”

“I took a pony taxi cart – with my luggage today – 5 cents and then the local for 5 cents – on both occassions gentleman offered to put my luggage on and take it off. Also, a young man offered his seat on a bus … there is so much courtesy and respect here.”

“Forget to say – bought a fresh pineapple and mango in the market today both for a total amount of 25 cents !!!! I have also seen mango trees for the first time – they look great with the big juicy fruit hanging from them.”

“The homes here are fabulous ‘- I could have moved this morning to an amazing house – antique furniture and french lights from 100 years ago -worth a fortune in the west, but I decided to stay with my current family as they are really lovely – they are preparing tonight for me a prawn dish.”

“Then I found a great group of musicians aged 50 to 70 I think – wow, they were cuban jamming – it was fabulous – again they let me take lots of photos. I had a salsa class this morning – hysterical – Mireya this large black Mama – she was trying to get me to  move my shoulders – she was in hysterics as I am such a wooden European when it comes to dancing – mind you she said I had great hip movement.”

Also, I found to gems of restaurants – they are using pottery and glassware that are collectors items 100 + years – I took so many photos – it would be like eating at Buckingham Palace.”

I can’t wait for Tina’s next email…….

OPP 2011 awards….what a joke

I’ve just had an email regarding the OPP awards.

Categories for the OPP awards include the overseas property market, mortgage companies, foreign exchange companies etc.

Well to enter they are asking for the sum of £295 as well as a 1000 word article on why you should win.

Each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of £295 PLUS VAT (or €340/ $480 PLUS VAT.) You can pay by credit
card at Google Checkout at http://oppmedia.org/OPPawards/H9C-4ZC/opp.aspx or by cheque. Cheques must be
made payable to RGG Ltd and sent to Naomi Zammit, address: OPP Awards, 17 Heath Road, Twickenham. TW1 4AW.”

You can win and not even have to talk to anyone/a judge etc.

“The entry forms for each award category must be completed in full and give sufficient information to enable the judging panel to assess merit WITHOUT NECESSARILY VISITING PROJECTS OR INTERVIEWING CANDIDATES.”

To win an OPP award it seems you just need to be willing to pay them a lot of money, £££££££ and get someone good to write an article about you. That seems to be a good part of the mix to win an award.
