Do gooders or ghouls?

Santander has reported that 43% of people would like masks to be banned over halloween, 22% would like halloween banned and 50% would like mandatory parental accompaniment.

It is one of the worst times of year for malicious damage to homes and cars, but this isn’t the fault of halloween. It is the fault of parents who fail to install respect to others and self discipline from an early age. You can’t let children run feral and then wonder why they are off the rails as teens.

My daughter is 13 and in her class there is one girl who is out reguarly on her own in town getting drunk, smokes and has started a sexual relationship. She has a terrible reputation in the school both from teachers and her peers. She’s a teen but she’s also a child. I wouldn’t want her turning up at my door during halloween but I still enter into the spirit of it and find it sad that so many people are too scared to even open their doors during this one night of festivities. We don’t have many festivals in the UK compared to other parts of Europe so let’s not kill off the ones that we do have…..

If teens get out of control on halloween then they and the parents should be held to account. If my son or daughter did something malicious to another person’s property then I would expect nothing less. They are my children, my responsibility and I have to be held accountable for them until they leave home.

Wishing everyone a safe and very happy Halloween………

Some recent health insurance news for those with HIV has shown that in the UK those that have HIV can now live up to 16 years longer than they could 10 years ago, thanks to the new drugs now available.

A man who is diagnosed with HIV at the age of 20 can now live up to the age of 46, whereas the previous life expectancy was 30 years.

It is assumed that 25 percent of the 80,000 people in the UK that carry HIV do not know that they even have it.

The study was on those around the age of 20 years that started anti-retroviral treatment between 1996 and 1999 and then 2006 and 2008.

Although we do not yet have a cure for HIV the new treatments that are now widely used is good news for those that carry HIV and of course for their families.

Critical Illness insurance cover explained

Critical illness cover will give you a lump sum of money or a monthly income if you  find you are unable to work due to a serious illness or disability. Before you take out critical illness insurance check with your employer that don’t have it covered already in your contract.

One in four women and one in five men statistically experience some sort of serious illness before retirement. Critical illness insurance takes away the immediate financial pressure by giving you a sum of money which could be used for example to pay off your mortgage.

Critical illness cover pays out if you are diagnosed with an illness stated  in the policy  and then survive for at least 14 days after the initial diagnosis. The main types of illness that are covered include most types of cancer, heart attact, strokes and organ transplants, multiple sclerosis and coronary artery bypasses.

For a man who is looking for £100,000 cover over a 25 year period the cost is around £16-£20 a month. Look into the cover and decide if you want blindness or dementia before a certain age to be covered and find out what the insurers policy is on prostate cancer. Better to know exactly what you are buying and what will and won’t be covered before you actually find you need critical illness cover and find your insurer will only give you a partial pay out.

Insurers offering critical illness cover include Legal and General, Asda and LV.

Average vet bill for a pedigree dog is over £400

The average cost of a vet’s bill for a pedigree dog has risen to over £400 according to Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance. The cost of a claim has risen 34% in just 12 months.

The average vet bill for a cat is over £300.

Helen Williams, head of Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance, said: “Those with pedigree pets can often face even higher veterinary bills because these animals often suffer more from hereditary health problems.”

We bought our dog Charlie four months ago and we still haven’t set up pet insurance, it is on the list but never gets done. The last vet’s bill cost us over £100 and that was for treatment for a hot spot, a packet of Stronghold for fleas and a couple of dog chews. The last bill was something like that too and that was for treatment for a severe case of ear mites and a special shampoo as he was getting a little itchy after jumping into a stagnant mosquito infested pond.

I’ve just raised the “get pet insurance for Charlie” a little higher on the list…..but it is still below finding a halloween costume for my daughter, getting some cakes in for the school disco and making them look like I made them myself and defrosting the freezer. I think there may be a polar bear inside.

If you need to make a complaint about your insurance company you will need to contact the FSO, knows as the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Firstly contact your insurance company to tell them about your complaint and to give them the opportunity to make it right with you. They have up to 8 weeks to do this. If this does not work and you are still unhappy then contact the FSO. The Ombudsman is binding and any decision they make the insurance company will have to adhere to.

The FSO email address is complaint.info@financial-ombudsman.org.uk

Municipal Mutual Insurance pays executives a bonus if they avoid asbestos claims

Municipal Mutual Insurance, Builders Accident, Excess and the Independent Insurance Company are all paying their executives a bonus if they get out of paying compensation to families that have been affected by asbestos.

Around 25,000 families have a family member that has contracted an asbestos related disease from the workplace and these four insurance companies are offering incentives to their workforce for getting out of paying any compensation.

The Association of British Insurers has commented, “This is being brought by a small group against the views of the majority of UK insurers. Most active insurers are happy to pay to people with employers’ liability policies.”

The insurance companies go to court in December. If they lose they will have to pay out around 250 million pounds.

Let’s hope they lose.

Lawyers work free to help London riot victims claim insurance

A charity called LawWorks has approached city legal firms to see which ones would work for free to help the London riot victims claim insurance.

They contacted 17, 12 of which agreed to work with the charity and 8 which refused.

Berwin Leighton Paisner should be applauded for being one such firm that is currently working with the charity and is involved in helping one victim sort out her insurance claim. She has had such a negative experience with the insurance company, is around £10,000 out of pocket and Berwin Leighton Paisner are helping her sort out the correct amount of insurance that she should receive which the loss adjustor appears to grossly miscalculated.

“Dealing with the insurance aspect of the situation has been worse than the ordeal of having our home burnt down. Many items of our property have gone astray or have been damaged even further, and, despite the claim, we have lost at least £10,000.”

Another legal firm Slaughter and May are also helping the charity.

Lawyers get such a bad press but these two companies have stepped forward to help victims whilst others have melted into the background….

Do I need landlord insurance

October 20, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment

If you have recently bought or are buying a property in the UK and are asking yourself do you need landlord insurance, from my own personal experience I would say yes.

With the credit crunch and UK laws so in favour of the tenant, the chance of your tenant losing their job and not being able to pay their rent, YOUR rent, is higher than average. A friend is currently facing the prospect of going it alone in evicting her tenant who has no job, no money and is sitting pretty in a flat that is worth over £1000 a month in rental.

Before we get any tenants in our properties we ask the rental agency to ensure that they get firstly a credit check and then take out both landlord insurance and rent guarantee insurance. The credit check is used by the landlord insurance company to find out if the tenant is credit worthy and has any past court cases or county judgements against them.

The rent guarantee insurance means that our rent will be paid if the tenant defaults on their rental payments and the insurance company also provides us with legal aid to help evict. Thankfully we have never had to go through the  horrible experience of having a tenant not pay their rental and suffer the financial consequences of not having the mortgage paid…. but I know others that have. Landlord insurance along with rent guarantee help me sleep a lot better at night…..

I think I pay just under £100 a year for it.
