Malaga Airport is 8 kilometres west of Malaga city and each year over 12 million people arrive at the Costa del Sol’s main airport. It has recently been extended and another Terminal building has been added.
Although there are bars, cash machines and internet access, Malaga airport has no left luggage facility on offer for passengers.
Transfers from Malaga airport are easy. Directly from outside the Terminal Two building at Malaga Airport is a direct coach that travels to Malaga city centre or into Marbella via the small bus station. Marbella bus station has taxis readily available from outside it, however these carry 4 passengers and if you are a party of 5 or more you will need to take 2 taxis. The coach service from Malaga airport to Marbella runs every 45 minutes in the summer and every 90 minutes in the winter. If you have a long delay I suggest you go upstairs to arrivals where they have a lovely coffee and cake shop near the main doors and the area is much more welcoming than downstairs in arrivals.
Taxis are always available outside of Malaga Airport and they are stricly regulated.
For the train service from Malaga Aiport do the following.The train station is outside the airport building and there is not a sign from the Arrivals Hall. Take the lift in the arrivals hall up to the Departures Hall and then walk outside heading towards the upper level parking area. Ensure that you walk in line with the terminal building. The parking area is to your left, walk to the end of the parking area and then turn immediately left. You will then proceeed which passes over the road below. From here you will see the red signs indicating the train station. The walk from Malaga airport is about 10 minutes. I am getting conflicting reports on whether there are steps which would then be a problem if you have mobility problems. I will post more information once this has been clarified.
You must buy a ticket before you board the train otherwise you will get a heavy fine. There is a ticket machine at the train station.
The train station is excellent if you are heading to Malaga city or Fuengirola. If you are heading to Marbella then you will have to use the coach or taxi or car hire. There is no train service yet that connects Marbella and San Pedro or Estepona to Malaga airport. There are plans for this for the future.
