Saint of the Fishermen

Today is the fiesta of Virgen Del Carmen and in the town of Marbella by the port, the fishing boats were out late afternoon, laden with people, to float out in a convoy with the effigy of the Virgen del Carmen aboard a flower strewn fishing boat. The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of fishermen and all that rely on the sea for their living. As well as young and old rubbing shoulders together on the boats, firecrackers took to the sky leaving plumes of smoke in their wake.

Long ago it was believed that only from today, July 16th would the sea be pure enough to swim in, but I think we’ve all been dipping more than just our toes in during the last few weeks.

I’ll try and put a few photos up of the fishing boats this week-end…..after my siesta …….
